Reception

Reading in Reception is important, so children learn to segment and blend sounds to read words and simple sentences, through daily phonic sessions. We follow the Essential Letters and sounds schemes which promotes children’s learning of phonics to keep up rather than catch up.

We foster a love of reading, by sharing stories and rhymes, which develop their vocabulary and comprehension.

We provide opportunities for children to share stories in small groups, where they can demonstrate their understanding of the story, by recalling key events (beginning, middle and endings) and linking these to their own experiences.

There are lots of opportunities to read for pleasure, with a range of texts linked to our topics and books matched to their phonic ability.

Children in Reception love to listen to a range of different stories which are read to them by an adult. Some children read weekly with ‘reading friends’ and enjoy being able to explore the features of a book as well as phonically decoding to read the words and simple sentences.

Each week children take home a book matched to their phonic ability so that they are able to read this independently. Children in Reception visit the library in school once a week to choose a free reader book, this is to be explored with parents at home.

Reception children really enjoy reading.

Fatima: “We learn from stories”. “We should listen to our mums because Little Red Riding Hood didn’t listen and the wolf ate her”.

Aayan: “I feel happy because I can read”.

Rayid: “ We should share, that’s what it says in the book”.

Liyana: “I don’t like the girl in the book, because she was naughty and didn’t listen”.

Nimrah: “I learnt a new sound, I didn’t know this sound ‘th’”.

Yaman: “When I read, I feel happy”.
